GREENSBORO, NC – The Winthrop Baseball team won its fifth straight game with a 11-4 victory over North Carolina A&T on Tuesday night at War Memorial Stadium.
The Eagles improve to 21-16 and will host Wofford on Wednesday at The Winthrop Ballpark on Autism Awareness Night. North Carolina A&T falls to 20-15.
The Eagles scored three runs in the top of the first when
Matthew Mulkey led off the game with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Brandon Fite.
Mitch Spires and
Hunter Lipscomb drew back-to-back walks and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch before, and
Babe Thomas drove them home with a single up the middle..
Winthrop took a 4-0 lead in the third inning on a solo home run by Spires and then plated two more runs in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. Spires figured into the scoring again after hitting a double and advancing to third on a ground out. He scored the fifth run when the Aggie's pitcher balked him in. The second run came after
Tyler Halstead reached base on an error, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on a double by
Scout McFalls.
The Eagles added three more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 9-0 lead. The inning was highlighted by a solo home run by Fite.
After the Aggies scored three in the bottom of the sixth off Eagle starting pitcher Daniel Wilcutt, the Eagles added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Paulsen that scored
Jake Sullivan. Paulsen then scored on a single to left by Spires.
NC A&T added one more in the bottom of the eighth to make the final score 11-4.
Willcutt improved to 2-0 this season after he pitched seven innings, allowed three runs on eight hits. Aggie starter Leon Hunter suffered the loss and falls to 0-1 this season. He went three innings and allowed four runs on four hits.
Spires led the Eagles at the plate as he went 3-for-4, including the HR, with two RBI, and three runs scored. Halstead went 1-for-2 with two RBI, one run scored, and three walks, and Fite went 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run scored, and the home run.
