MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore
Hunter Lipscomb led Winthrop to a 9-7 win over Albany on Sunday at Pelicans Park in the final game of the Tidelands Health Classic which snapped a six-game losing streak.
Lipscomb went 3 for 5 with a triple and two singles and drove home three runs to lead Winthrop's 14-hit attack against six Dane pitchers. The win improves Winthrop's record to 5-6 while
Albany falls to 3-4. Winthrop will travel to Columbia on Wednesday, Mar. 8, to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks at 7 pm at Founders Park.
In addition to Lipscomb's production at the plate, sophomore
Brandon Fite also went 3 for 5 with an RBI, sophomore
Matthew Mulkey went 2 for 3 with two RBI, and senior
CJ Hicks went 1 for 3 with a double and two RBI.
Winthrop's freshman
Zach Peek (1-0) earned his first collegiate win as he threw six innings, allowing four runs on five hits. Albany starter J.T. Genovese (0-1) suffered the loss as he lasted 2.2 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits.
The Great Danes got on the board in the top of the second inning when Travis Collins doubled to right center and scored on a Matt Codispoti single to left. The Eagles rallied for two runs in the bottom inning when junior
Wesley Williams singled to left, advanced to second on groundout by Hicks, and scored on a Mulkey single to left field. Mulkey advanced to second on a stolen base and scored on a Fite single to center field.
Winthrop added on four more runs in the bottom of the third inning when junior
Mitch Spires and Paulsen both singled, and scored on Lipscomb's triple. Senior
Babe Thomas' sacrifice fly to left scored Lipscomb. The fourth run came after Williams reached on an error by the pitcher Charlie Peltz, advanced to second on a groundout to the pitcher, and scored on the double by Hicks.
The Eagles added insurance in the bottom of the fourth with one run and the bottom of the fifth with two more runs.
After Peek was relieved in the seventh inning by
Carson Gregory, Albany scored six runs on three singles, a double, a triple, one walk, a hit batter, and one wild pitch to close to make it a 9-7 game, but
Riley Arnone came on to record his first save of the season by throwing 2.1 innings of hitless baseball.
