ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team opens conference play Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. on the road at Campbell, looking to begin defense of its conference title.
The Eagles (3-7) are looking to rebound from two losses to close out their non-conference schedule, falling to Cincinnati and Michigan on the road last weekend. Winthrop has won its conference opener each of the last two season.
Junior Nicole Beatson continues to lead the Eagles in scoring and is tied for the conference lead with 29 goals. She has also tallied 11 assists and leads the Big South in points with 40. Katie Clark came on strong over the weekend, netting six goals against Cincinnati and now has 18 on the season. Defensively, Katherine Judge leads the team with 20 caused turnovers, 29 ground balls and 40 draw controls.
Campbell comes into Saturday's contest with a 3-6 overall record and has dropped its last two matches, falling to Richmond and Virginia Tech.
Sophomore Melissa Placek leads the team with 18 goals while junior Kayla Reilly has netted 16 goals. Reilly leads the team in points with 32 as she has assisted on 16 goals as well this year. Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Erin O'Hara is fourth on the team in caused turnovers this year with five and fifth in ground balls with 11.
The Eagles and Camels have four mutual opponents so far this season. Both squads fell to Cincinnati and Elon while both defeated Davidson. Winthrop downed VCU 19-7 while Campbell fell to the Rams 14-10. Winthrop is 4-0 all-time against Campbell, having won twice both at home and on the road.
Following the trip to Buies Creek, the Eagles will head to High Point for a 7 p.m. contest against the Panthers on Wednesday.
