ANN ARBOR, MI – The Winthrop lacrosse team outscored the Michigan Wolverines 8-3 in the final 33 minutes Sunday but was unable to overcome a six-goal first half deficit, falling 10-9 on the road in the team's final non-conference contest of the season.
Winthrop (3-7) trailed 7-1 with less than three minutes remaining in the first half but closed the half with two goals in the final 2:19. Katie Clark scored an unassisted goal and Kristen Shriver converted a free-position attempt to pull the Eagles within 7-3 at the break. Nicole Beatson scored the only other goal for Winthrop in the first half.
The Eagles continued their scoring tear through the first six minutes of the second half. Sydney Cope and Ellie Marindin each scored once while Beatson added two more goals to guide the Eagles to tying the score at 7-7 with 24:44 on the clock.
Michigan (4-8) went back up by one with 23:40 remaining in the game only to have Winthrop respond just over a minute later with another tally from Beatson. The Wolverines again grabbed a one-goal edge with just over 20 minutes on the clock before both teams went on a more than 13-minute scoring drought. Katherine Judge leveled the score with just over seven minutes left and Michigan found the game-winner with 3:05 remaining.
Beatson finished with four goals on seven shots and added one assist. Shriver led the team in draw controls with three and ground balls with four. Judge also added three draw controls.
The Winthrop defense limited Michigan to only eight shots in the second half while forcing nine turnovers for the game. Chloe Wormsley finished with seven saves on the game.
The Eagles will remain on the road to open conference play. Winthrop heads to Campbell on April 1 and High Point on April 5.
