ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team dropped its first home contest of the season Friday afternoon, falling 19-9 to the William & Mary Tribe.
With the loss the Eagles fell to 1-2 on the season and will host the VCU Rams on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Eagle Field. William & Mary improved to 1-2.
Both sides got off to a slow start offensively with each team netting only one goal each in the first 12 minutes. Junior Kristen Shriver grabbed Winthrop's goal on a feed from Nicole Beatson. The Tribe then tallied the next four goals of the game, going up 5-1 with 14:37 left in the half.
The Eagles and Tribe then traded the next six goals as Katie Clark scored once and Beatson grabbed two and Winthrop trailed by three at 7-4 with 3:34 on the clock. William & Mary was able to score the final two goals of the half to take a 9-4 lead into the break.
Beatson got the scoring going for Winthrop in the second half, netting her third of the game less than four minutes into the period to pull the Eagle within 9-5. William & Mary then scored the next seven goals, opening a 16-5 lead and putting the game away.
The Eagles were able to net four more goals over the final 15 minutes of the contest. Beatson along with Sydney Cope, Katie Clark and Ellie Marindin each found the back of the net.
Beatson finished with four goals on five shots while also adding one assist. Clark added two goals while Marindin and Cope each tallied one.
Katherine Judge was strong hunting down the ball for the Eagles, picking up four ground balls and corralling seven draw controls. Madison Cassidy finished with three caused turnovers while Judge, Jordyn Elliott and Paige Jenkins each added two. Goalie Chloe Wormsley finished with eight saves.
