Winthrop Women Fall Victim To Campbell's 3-Point Shooting in 70-35 Loss

Camels Connect on 14 Threes, Including Nine by Carolina Bowns

ROCK HILL, SC— Carolina Bowns connected on nine 3-pointers and scored a game-high 30 points to lead Big South Conference co-leader Campbell to a 70-35 win over Winthrop on Tuesday night.

Winthrop lost its sixth straight game and drops to 2-23 overall and 1-12 in the Big South while Campbell improves to 18-6 and 10-3 in the conference.

Campbell ended the night making 14 of 40 three-point attempts, included a nine for 17 performance by Bowns.  She was the only Camel to reach double figures.  Winthrop also had just one double-digit scorer as Noell Kellers scored a season-high 14 points.  Senior Erica Williams scored six points after coming off a career-high 35-point performance last Saturday at Longwood.

Both teams got off to a slow start before Bowns began to light it up from outside with a 3-pointer to give her team a 12-8 lead after one quarter. Winthrop led 8-5 after Noell Kellers connected on the first of four 3-pointers in the game with 4:58 remaining in the opening period, but the Eagles then went 9 minutes, 17 seconds without scoring and fell behind 18-8 as the Camels went on a 13-0 run.

Erica Williams finally ended the drought by drilling a 17-foot jumper at the 5:41 mark of the second quarter to make the score 18-10. The Eagles managed to score only four points in the entire second quarter and shot just 18 percent in the first half (4-22) as they trailed 26-12 at intermission.

The Camels scored 15 first half points from behind the 3-point arc as they attempted 21 three pointers in the first half.

Campbell continued to bomb away from the outside to open the third quarter.  Bowns connected on the first of her seven second half 3-pointers just 24 seconds into the period.  She scored eight of her team's next 12 points to give Campbell a 41-17 lead with 5:03 left in the third period.  Campbell led 53-22 after three quarters.

The Camels continued to build the lead to as many as 36 as they made four straight threes to begin the fourth quarter.  Bowns connected on three straight from beyond the arc to make it a 65-30 game with 5:17 left to play.

Winthrop's next game will be on Saturday when the Eagles travel to Gardner-Webb for a 2 p.m. start.
