ROCK HILL, SC – Four Eagles tallied double-digit scoring Sunday but the Winthrop women's basketball team fell 74-63 to the East Tennessee State Buccaneers at the Winthrop Coliseum.
The Eagles fell to 1-6 on the season while East Tennessee improved to 6-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
East Tennessee jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the opening 3:34 of the contest but Winthrop was able to cut the deficit down to three at 9-6 just over a minute later. The Bucs then went on a 10-0 run, opening a 19-6 advantage with 2:11 left in the first quarter. East Tennessee held a nine-point edge at 21-12 after the opening 10 minutes.
The two sides traded buckets through the first five minutes of the second quarter before East Tennessee went on a 6-0 run, taking a 13-point lead with 2:33 left before halftime. Winthrop closed the half on a 7-2 run and trailed 35-27 at the break.
The opening five minutes of the third quarter saw runs from both teams. East Tennessee opened the third with an 8-0 run followed by a 6-0 run from the Eagles. Winthrop was unable to cut into the Bucs' lead any further and ETSU took a 56-43 lead into the final stanza.
In the fourth quarter, the two teams traded three pointers in the opening minute before Winthrop went on a quick 6-0 run in just over a minute to get within seven at 59-52 with 7:17 left in the contest. Despite the quick spurt, the Eagles couldn't maintain any momentum as the Bucs slowly regained their double-digit advantage.
The Bucs led by as much as 17 with just over two minutes to play before Winthrop went on a 6-0 run but the deficit was too big to overcome as the Eagles fell 74-63.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Emily Kelley led the Eagles with 18 points while Ronata Rogers posted her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Courtney Hagaman added 12 points while Angela Coello-Perez finished with 11.
The Eagles had their second best shooting night of the season, connecting on 42 percent of their shots from the field including 40 percent from three-point range while also converting 73 percent of their free-throw attempts.
Turnovers continued to play a big part in the Eagles' struggles as they committed 30 turnovers which led to 33 East Tennessee points. The Bucs dominated on the glass, out-rebounding the Eagles 47-31 including 26-12 on the offensive end.
WHAT'S UP NEXT
Winthrop will have the week off before hosting its final home contest of 2017 against the Wofford Terriers on Saturday, December 9 at 2 p.m. The Eagles will then have a short turnaround as they will head to Duke for a contest against the Blue Devils on December 10.
