BOILING SPRINGS, NC – The Winthrop Volleyball team defeated Gardner-Webb 3-2 after falling the first two sets on Thursday.

EAGLES HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Jace Kleffner led the Eagles with 12 kills, zero errors, and a .500 hitting percentage
- Junior Carlie Skelton helped the Eagles with 22 digs and three service aces
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
- Both teams kept it close until the Bulldogs started pulling away and making it 12-7
- The Eagles fought back and tied up twice at 14-14 and 20-20
- Gardner-Webb held Winthrop off to win the first set 25-23
- Junior Phoebe Wu had five kills in this set and freshman Puaoolelagi Sao had 10 digs
Set 2
- The Bulldogs started on a 14-3 run
- Gardner-Webb went up 24-18 and Winthrop went on a 4-0 run but the Bulldogs held on to win 25-22
- Wu had four kills and Skelton had six digs and two service aces
Set 3
- Both teams fought back-and-forth until Winthrop started pulling away at 13-9
- The Bulldogs fought back to tie it at 16-16
- The Eagles held on to win 25-20
- Wu had five kills and Skelton had eight digs
Set 4
- Both teams were neck-and-neck until Winthrop started pulling away 19-14
- The Bulldogs tried to fight back but were unable to as the Eagles won the set 25-18
- Kleffner had six kills and Wu had five in that set
Set 5
- Gardner-Webb started on a 4-1 run
- The Bulldogs continued that run to make it 10-5 that force Winthrop to call a timeout
- The Eagles went on a 8-3 run to tie it at 13-13
- Tied 14-14, Winthrop went on to win 16-14 after a kill by Wu and an attack error by Tyra Long
- Kleffner had three kills
