Five Players In Double-Figures In Eagles Road Loss To Auburn

AUBURN, AL—Jermaine Ukaegbu led five players in double-figures with a career-high 12 points in a 119-85 loss at Auburn, Friday evening.

  • Mustapha Heron (31 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals)
  • Bryce Brown (21 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists)
  • Malik Dunbar (13 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) 
FIRST HALF
  • With the Eagles trailing 8-6 Bjorn Broman missed two free throws and Auburn went on an 8-0 run
  • The run pushed the lead to 16-6 as seven of the first 16 points came on second chances
  • The run came to an end when Charles Falden scored and was fouled as he completed the three-point play
  • The Eagles first three-point field goal of the game came at the 9:35 mark when Kyle Zunic drilled one to make it a 22-16 lead for Auburn
  • Trailing by nine the Eagles went on a 9-1 run that was started on the Zunic three and capped off by a Nych Smith floater in the lane
  • After the two teams traded dunks Josh Ferguson stole the ball and on the other end Austin Awad drilled his second three for a 27-25 lead with 7:24 left in the half (the first lead of the game for Winthrop)
  • The second Awad three made it a 14-3 run as the Eagles made five shots in the row (ended up making six in a row after starting game 4-for-17)
  • Auburn responded with an 12-0 run to grab a 38-29 lead with five and a half minutes left
  • The run came to an end after a three from Smith, but it was temporary as Auburn put another run together (12-0 run for a 50-32 lead with 2:26 left)
  • Auburn finished the half making 14 of its final 21 field goals to help grab a 58-36 lead at the break
  • Winthrop shot 40 percent from the field in the first half while Auburn shot 56 percent and had a 14-4 advantage in second chance points 
SECOND HALF
  • Bryce Brown was 0-for-3 behind the arc in the first half, but opened up the second half 3-for-3 from three to push Auburns lead to 69-42 in the early going of the second half (finished the second half 6-for-6 from three)
  • The Eagles had a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 21 with 15:04 left as Zunic and Anders Broman knocked down threes
  • Auburn shot 69 percent from the floor in the second half, including 10-for-11 behind the arc
  • The Tigers made their final seven shots of the game and 13 of the final 16 shots 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Winthrop placed five players in double-figures as it finished shooting 43 percent from the floor
  • The Eagles made 13 threes in the game (4th straight game with 13 or more threes in a game)
  • Bryce Brown was 1-for-6 behind the arc in the first half, but opened up the second half 3-for-3 from three to push Auburns lead to 69-42
  • The Tigers shot 62 percent for the game (14-for-25 from three) and they were 21-for-28 at the foul line
  • The two teams combined for 90 points from the bench as the Eagles had 44 points and Auburn had 46
  • Second chance points were nearly even as Auburn had an 18-14 edge

  • Xavier Cooks, the team's leader in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks, missed the game due to an internal discipline by head coach Pat Kelsey
  • Smith scored in double-figures for the second straight game off the bench and for the third time in four games
  • Mitch Hill came off the bench to score a career-high nine points on 3-for-4 shooting
