Eagles Earn First Big South Victory With 2-1 Road Win Over Gardner-Webb Wednesday

BOILING SPRINGS, NC – The Winthrop women's soccer team earned its first conference victory of the season Wednesday in come-from-behind fashion, downing the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bulldogs (2-9-1, 0-2-1) opened the scoring in the 25th minute as Kayla Curatolo sent a cross into the box and after the ball bounced around for a few seconds, Samuelle Grove got a foot to it and put it in the back of the net.

Winthrop (4-6-1, 1-3) evened the match in the 39th minute.  Brianna Palmer and Natalie Royaards raced into the penalty area and with a quick give-and-go, Royaards took the pass and placed the ball into the corner.

The game-winner for the Eagles came off the foot of Allie Thomas in the 73rd minute.  Off a long throw from Courtney McLeod, Thomas was able to get her head to the ball and nod it past the goalkeeper.

STATS OF NOTE

Freshman goalie Ashlynn Harris earned her first career victory with the win while making three saves.  The Eagles outshot the Bulldogs 11-9 and had an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks.  Thomas led the Eagles with three shots while McLeod added two.

NEXT TIME OUT

The Eagles will return home Saturday afternoon when they host the Presbyterian College Blue Hose at 1 p.m. at Eagle Field.
