Winthrop Succumbs to PC's 3-point Shooting in 78-39 Loss

ROCK HILL, SC— Presbyterian College connected on 15 three-pointers, turned 20 offensive rebounds into 19 points, and took advantage of 18 Winthrop turnovers in route to a 78-39 Big South Conference victory on Saturday at the Winthrop Coliseum.

Winthrop's losing streak now stands at 17 as the Eagles fall to 1-17 overall and drop to 0-6 in conference play.  PC is now 6-11 overall and improves to 4-2 in the Big South.  The Blue Hose have now won the last three meetings with Winthrop, but still trail the all-time series 20-6.

PC used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Winthrop as four players reached double figures, including 11 points from Kacie Hall, Rebecca Walker and Aianna Kelly.  Cortney Storey added 10.  Freshmen Danyael Goodhope and Marissa Cantrell led Winthrop with nine and eight points, respectively.  Erica Williams, who came into the game averaging 13.4 points, finished with four and did not play in the second half because of illness.

PC jumped out to a 17-7 lead after the first quarter by scoring nine points off seven Eagle turnovers.  The margin swelled to 23 at halftime as the Blue Hose connected on five 3-point FGs including a buzzer beater by Hall that gave PC a 40-17 lead.

Winthrop got an offensive lift in the second half from Cantrell who connected on four of eight shots and scored all eight of her points.  A 3-pointer by Goodhope cut the Winthrop deficit to 19 (41-22) with 6:59 left in the third quarter.  The Eagles still trailed by 19 at 45-26 after Cantrell and Amari Grevious traded baskets with PC, but that was as close as they could get as the Blue Hose led 59-35 at the end of three quarters.

PC shot 37 percent for the game (29-78), including 15 of 37 from behind the arc. The 29 field goals came off 22 assists.  PC also had a decisive advantage on the boards (53-39), and used that margin to outscore Winthrop 19-1 on second chance points. Winthrop shot 30 percent (17-57).

Winthrop will be at home again on Tuesday when it hosts Longwood at 7 p.m.
