ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team returns to action this weekend, looking to extend their current two-game win streak, as it heads to the Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament hosted by UMBC.
The Eagles will start the tournament at 4 p.m. on Friday against Robert Morris. On Saturday Winthrop will meet the host Retrievers at 10 a.m. followed by Morgan State at 5:30 p.m.
Winthrop is coming off a busy Labor Day weekend that saw the Eagles go 2-2, finishing with a thrilling five-set victory over Georgia Southern Monday evening.
The Eagles had multiple strong performances against Georgia Southern, highlighted by two career-highs in kills as Brianna Gray finished with 21 and Keaupono Fey totaled 20. Gray finished with a .429 attack percentage while Fey totaled a .440 hitting percentage.
The Robert Morris Colonials enter the weekend with a 4-3 record. They are coming off a three-set loss to Kent State on Tuesday after going undefeated in their own weekend tournaments, topping Buffalo, Coppin State and Bucknell. The Eagles and Colonials have only met once before, in 1992, as Robert Morris came away with the victory.
The UMBC Retrievers are riding a three-match winning streak after going undefeated in this past weekend's Charm City Classic. UMBC downed Akron, Loyola (MD) and Delaware State, dropping only two sets along the way. Winthrop is winless in 10 all-time meetings against the Retrievers but the two sides haven't met since 1997.
Morgan State enters the weekend still looking for its first victory on the season, having gone 0-7 so far this year. Through seven matches, the Bears have only mustered three set victories. Winthrop won the only meeting between these two programs, back in 2009.
Following this weekend's action, the Eagles will return home for a single non-conference contest against the Western Carolina Catamounts on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
