ROCK HILL, SC— The Winthrop Eagles' baseball squad won their last home game of the season, on senior day, against Longwood at Winthrop Ballpark Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, Winthrop is now 27-23 (11-10 BSC) on the season, while Longwood improves to 30-22 (14-10 BSC).
Winthrop struck first in the bottom of the 4th when Jace Whitley hit a sacrifice fly to score Anthony Paulsen who had singled to left field earlier in the inning.
Longwood quickly responded seizing the lead in the top of the 5th scoring two runs on three hits for the 2-1 lead.
The Eagles regained the lead in the bottom of the 6th when Mitch Spires hit a two run homer scoring Lowrie who reached on a single earlier in the inning.
Winthrop continued to add to their lead in the bottom of the 7th when Tyler Asbill doubled to right field and was later sent home on a Paulsen single up the middle.
Winthrop's defense and bullpen held strong to close the game out for a 4-2 final.
Senior starting pitcher Zach Sightler earned the win on the afternoon and is now 6-3 on the season. Sightler pitched six innings allowing three hits, two earned runs, and compiled three strikeouts along the way.
Winthrop will hit the road for a four game road swing to close out the season beginning with game at Charlotte Tuesday, May 17 at 6:00 pm. The Eagles dropped a 7-1 decision to Charlotte earlier in the season at BB&T Ballpark.
