Lacrosse Advances To Big South Semifinals With 18-2 Victory Over Presbyterian Sunday

ROCK HILL, SC – In a game that spanned two days, the Winthrop lacrosse team secured an 18-2 victory Sunday over the Presbyterian Blue Hose in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference Tournament.

With the victory, Winthrop (18-2) advances to the conference semifinals on Thursday against Coastal Carolina at 4 p.m. at Eagle Field.  Presbyterian finishes its season with a 3-15 record.

The Eagles and Blue Hose were able to play 8:14 Saturday evening before torrential rain and lightning forced the suspension of the game.  Winthrop led 4-0 when the game was halted.

Upon the resumption Sunday morning, Winthrop picked up where it left off, scoring nine more goals in the first half and shutting out Presbyterian to take a 13-0 lead into halftime.

Winthrop's scoring slowed in the second half as the Eagles netted the first five goals to go up 18-0 but didn't score over the final 12 minutes of the contest.  Presbyterian was able to tally two goals in the final 10 minutes to reach the 18-2 final.

Shannon Gallagher and Kristen Shriver led the Eagles each with seven points.  Gallagher netted four goals and had three assists while Shriver scored two goals and recorded five assists.  Allie Yeager scored two goals Krista Frowein and Logan McCarthy each added two and McCarthy also tallied two assists.

Gallagher led the team with five draw controls while Jordyn Elliott added four.  Gallagher and Katherine Judge tied for the team lead with three ground balls each.  Alaina Girani finished with three saves while allowing only one goal in 50 minutes of time. 

Following Winthrop's semifinal match at 4 p.m. Thursday, the second semifinal will be contested between High Point and Campbell.  The championship is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday.  All games will be held at Eagle Field.
