ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop softball dropped both games of a doubleheader against Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon with losses of 8-1 and 10-6 as the two teams battled to capture the three-game series.
Winthrop drops to 13-30 on the year and 3-11 in the Big South while Coastal Carolina is now 24-19 overall and 7-5 in the league. Winthrop will step away from league action for its next contest as it heads to Furman for a doubleheader on Tuesday, Apr. 12 beginning at 4 p.m.
"They hit the ball today, they were on," said Winthrop co-head coach
Mark Cooke. "They adjusted to our pitchers well and we didn't adjust to theirs. We're just young and inexperienced. Last night was a big emotional win for us and I think we were a little flat today in the first game but second game we came back to life."
In the series-deciding contest, Winthrop grabbed a 6-2 lead after two innings behind a five-run second. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run by
Leah Young that put the Eagles on top 5-2.
Blake Wallert doubled to lead off and scored on a ground out by
Morgan Lowers. With runners at the corners, Young stepped up and ripped a shot to right center for her ninth of the season.
Coastal answered right back with three runs in the third and three in the fourth to grab the lead back at 8-6. Mackenzie Conrad, who had just entered the game as the pitcher in the bottom of the second, helped her own cause by blasting a three-run home run in the third. Morgan Noad hit a three-run homer in the fourth for the 8-6 advantage.
Annie Robinson hit a solo home run in the fifth and another in the seventh to add some insurance for the Chanticleers.
Conrad earned the win in the circle for Coastal as she tossed 1.1 innings of relief allowing just one hit, walking one and striking out one to improve to 2-1. Ashley Guillette, who kept the Winthrop offense quiet in the first game of the twin bill, tossed the final four innings allowing no hits and striking out five to earn her first save of the season.
Winthrop's
Keleigh Romine started the game in the circle and suffered the loss as she falls to 2-5 on the year after allowing eight runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Coastal Carolina powered its way past the Eagles in the first game of the doubleheader with a home run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to open up the game in its favor.
Winthrop led 1-0 after an inning thanks to an RBI single by
Zharne Glover, scoring
Shayna Covington from second. Covington led off the inning with a single to third base and moved to second after Young was hit by a pitch. Young moved to third on the Glover single when the throw came home but was stranded.
Kailey Mellen led off the second for Coastal and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring two batters later on a one-out double off the wall in center by Angela Buccilli. Two batters later Buccilli scored on a single up the middle by Taty Forbes to give the Chants a 2-1 lead.
Coastal added a run in the fourth and fifth before adding four more in the sixth behind a three-run home run by Timi Tooley. Kelsey Dominik led off the sixth with a solo home run to left. Mackenzie Conrad walked and then Annie Robinson doubled to put runners at second and third as Tooley stepped up. Tooley hit her shot to center as it looked like Glover was going to get under it at the wall, but the ball just went far enough to not have a play.
Chace Helms started in the circle for the Eagles as she took the loss after allowing two runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout. Guillette held Winthrop to one run on five hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.
On the day Young finished with three hits and three RBI while Covington finished with four hits and three runs. Both Young and Covington each finished with four hits in the series against Coastal while
Toni Pancione finished with three in two games this weekend.
