Eagles Host Longwood Saturday at 1 p.m. in Big South Contest

ROCK HILL, SC – Winthrop lacrosse will host Longwood Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Big South contest as the Eagles look to remain unbeaten in conference play.

Winthrop enters Saturday coming off a dominant 20-2 victory over Presbyterian Wednesday that improved its record to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

The Eagles got strong offensive and defensive performances against the Blue Hose. Goalie Alaina Girani recorded six saves and allowed only one goal in the victory.  Shannon Gallagher and Danielle Ellis each tallied four goals while Logan McCarthy led the team with six points on two goals and four assists.

Winthrop is allowing only 6.36 goals per game this year which leads the Big South and is fourth in the NCAA.  The Eagles are also fifth in Division I in scoring margin, outscoring their opponents by 7.43 goals per contest.   Girani dropped her goals-against average to 5.97 after Wednesday's contest which ranks her second in the NCAA and she leads the nation in save percentage, saving 55.7 percent of shots against her.

Longwood comes to Eagle Field with a 6-6 overall record and a 2-1 conference mark.  The Lancers are coming off a 12-11 loss to Liberty on Wednesday.  It was the first time the Lancers had ever lost to the Flames.

Sarah Butler and Katie McHugh lead Longwood's offense.  Butler has recorded 70 points this season on 37 goals and 33 assists while McHugh has ranked up 66 points on 36 goals and 30 assists.  Imani West has seen the majority of minutes in cage for the Lancers, recording a 3-6 record this season.  West has allowed an average of 12.29 goals per game while making 40 percent of her saves.

Winthrop is 1-2 all-time against Longwood.  The Lancers took the first two meetings before the Eagles thumped Longwood 15-4 last season in Farmville.

The Eagles will hit the road for their next contest on Wednesday as Winthrop makes the short trip to Gardner-Webb for a 6 p.m. contest against the Bulldogs.
