ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop Eagles' baseball team won the decisive Game 3 of the Big South Series against Radford Sunday afternoon at the Winthrop Ballpark 3-1.
With the win, Winthrop is now 18-18 (6-6) on the season, while Radford falls to 10-26 (4-8).
The Highlanders grabbed an early 1-0 lead when their leadoff hitter, Chris Coia, doubled to left field. Coia was advanced on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a passed ball.
Winthrop's Tyler Asbill reached on a hit by pitch and then tied the game at 1-1 when Mark Lowrie reached on a fielding error in the bottom of the 3rd.
Jace Whitley hit his second home run of the season with a solo shot to take the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 4th.
The Eagles continued to stretch the lead in the bottom of the 5th when Grant English was walked with loaded bases to score Anthony Paulsen who had reached on a single previously in the inning.
Winthrop's defense held up and the Eagles came out victorious 3-1 and won the series.
Winthrop's lefty starter Thad Harris was the winning pitcher going 8.0 innings while striking out six batters. Harris is now 3-3 on the season with a 4.05 ERA.
Winthrop will host Davidson in a mid-week non-conference matchup this Tuesday, April 19 at the Winthrop Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 pm.
