ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team will entertain the Campbell Camels Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Eagle Field in a critical Big South contest.
The Eagles enter Saturday's contest in a tie for first place in the conference at 5-0 with High Point while Campbell sits only a half-game behind the Eagles and Panthers with a 5-1 conference mark.
Both Winthrop and the Camels are coming off big victories Wednesday evening as the Eagles downed Gardner-Webb 19-7 and Campbell bested Presbyterian 18-7.
Through five conference contests, a trio of seniors, Shannon Gallagher, Logan McCarthy and Danielle Ellis, has led the Eagles offensively. Gallagher has netted 17 goals in Big South play while Ellis has recorded 23 points on 11 goals and 12 assists while McCarthy has added 13 goals and five assists.
Campbell is led by the nation's leading scorer, Loren Day, who has netted 58 goals this season including 24 in conference play. Merredith Bechler has been the Camels' primary goalie this season with an 8-5 record having allowed 12.22 goals per game while saving 34 percent of shots against her.
The Eagles are 3-0 all-time against the Camels and have been able to shut down the attacking power of Loren Day as she has scored only three goals in two games against the Eagles, having not played in the 2014 matchup.
Winthrop will close the regular season next week with a Wednesday road contest at Coastal Carolina before hosting High Point on Sunday, April 24 for Senior Day.
