ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop Eagles dropped a hard fought 11-7 decision to the Rhode Island Rams in Game 2 of the weekend series Saturday at the Winthrop Ballpark.
With the loss, Winthrop drops to 6-5 while Rhode Island is now 2-6.
Sam Kmiec picked up his first loss of the season while URI lefty Jake Rockefeller grabbed his first win of the season. The series will conclude
on Sunday, Mar. 6, 2016 at
12 noon.
The Eagles opened up the scoring early when
Jace Whitley grounded out with the bases loaded sending
Tyler Asbill home for the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1
st.
The Rams knotted the game at 1-1 when their first batter, Mike Corin homered over the leftfield wall in the top of the 2
nd.
Winthrop added three more runs in 2
nd.
Mitch Spires tripled sending Asbill home and then
Anthony Paulsen homered over the right field wall to clear the bases for a 4-1 score.
Winthrop received a little help from Rhode Island's lefty pitcher Tyler Wilson in the 3
rd when he loaded the bases by walking three Eagles.
Kyle Edwards hit a sacrifice fly allowing Whitley to score. Asbill later doubled sending Asbill home for another score for the 6-1 score.
The Rams tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the 4
th with a few deep balls. Corin hit a triple to centerfield and was knocked in from a single the following play. After Rhode Island hit two more singles, Ryan Olmo knocked in a grand slam over the right field wall.
Paulsen regained the lead for the Eagles in the 4
th when
Grant English hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field.
Once again the game was tied at 7-7 when Martin Figueroa scored when Corin grounded into a double play.
The lead changed yet again to 8-7 in the top of the 7
th when Figueroa scored on another Corin RBI. Corin was then sent home on a Gardella single to right field to extend the Rams lead to 9-7.
Rhode Island added another run in the top of the 8
th when Kevin Heiss scored on a Chris Hess groundout.
The Rams extended their lead to 11-7 when Gardella sent Mike Foley home.
Winthrop was unable to overcome the deficit in the bottom of the 9
th with the game concluding at 11-7.
