Ten Eagles Score In Lacrosse's 19-7 Victory Over VCU Friday Afternoon

RICHMOND, VA – The Winthrop lacrosse team had 10 different players tally goals Friday afternoon as the Eagles downed the VCU Rams 19-7 to remain unbeaten on the season.

The Eagles improved to 6-0 on the season and will play at William & Mary on Sunday at 1 p.m. while VCU fell to 1-3 on the year.

Senior Shannon Gallagher led the Eagles with five goals while freshman Alexis Linhardt added three.  Katie Clark, Abigail Blevins and Kristen Shriver each tallied two goals while Allie Yeager, Logan McCarthy, Danielle Ellis, Krista Frowein and Kienan Linhardt each added one.

Gallagher also led the team with five draw controls while Katherine Judge and Hayley Krause both grabbed four.  Judge led the team with four ground balls.  In goal, Alaina Girani made three saves in the victory.

"Our offense is really clicking right now," head coach John Sung said.  "Having 10 players score and seven with multiple points shows just how balanced our attack can be."

Winthrop started and ended the first half with three unanswered goals.  VCU was able to tally goals to stay within two at 3-1 and 4-2 but couldn't build any momentum to garner more than one goal in a row.  The Eagles were able to take a 9-3 lead into the break.

The Rams notched the first goal of the second half and continued to score sporadically but couldn't slow down the Eagle attack.  VCU scored its final goal of the contest with 6:26 remaining and Winthrop closed the game with four more unanswered tallies for the 19-7 victory.

Winthrop dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Rams 39-11.  The Eagles won the draw control and ground ball battles, 16-11 and 14-11 respectively.  Winthrop also converted on 80 percent (16-20) of their clear attempts.
