ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop Eagles' baseball squad completed their second shutout of the season with a 7-0 non-conference victory over North Carolina A&T Wednesday night at the Winthrop Ballpark.
With the win, Winthrop is now to 13-12 (1-2) on the season, while North Carolina A&T falls to 6-20.
The Eagles struck first in the bottom of the 1st when designated hitter Roger Gonzalez hit a two run homer scoring Tyler Asbill who had reached earlier in the inning on a single to center field.
Winthrop added another two runs in the bottom of the 3rd to extend their lead to 4-0. Anthony Paulsen singled with two outs to start the rally for the Eagles. Gonzalez later tripled to score Paulsen. Mitch Spires then reached on a fielders' choice advancing Gonzalez home.
The Eagles scored an additional run in the bottom of the 5th when Paulsen singled to right field scoring Asbill, who led the inning off with a single of his own.
Casey Parker hit the game's second home run for Winthrop in the bottom of the 6th seizing the 6-0 lead.
Paulsen led the bottom of the 7th off with a single to right field and was later sent home on a Mark Lowrie single to increase the Eagles' lead to 7-0.
Winthrop's starting pitcher Zach Cook grabbed his first win of the season and is now 1-2. Cook pitched three innings only allowing one hit while compiling three strikeouts along the way.
Winthrop will continue their home stretch when they play host to Big South Conference foe Liberty this weekend. Game 1 is scheduled for Friday, April 1 at the Winthrop Ballpark beginning at 6:00 p.m.
