RADFORD, VA – The Winthrop lacrosse team set a new single-game scoring record Saturday as the Eagles cruised to a 26-5 victory over the Radford Highlanders in the team's conference opener.
Winthrop improved to 10-2 on the year and 1-0 in the conference while Radford fell to 1-7 overall and 0-1 in the Big South.
The Eagles set team records for goals, points and assists and were led offensively by seniors Krista Frowein and Danielle Ellis. Frowein netted a career-high seven goals while Ellis notched nine points on four goals and five assists. Shannon Gallagher also contributed seven points with five goals and two assists. Sophomore Katherine Judge recorded a career-high 11 draw controls.
Winthrop went up 3-0 in the first 70 seconds before Radford grabbed its first goal of the game. The Eagles then went on a 9-0 run, going up 12-1 with 12 minutes remaining. The Highlanders scored their second goal of the half with 11 minutes on the clock and then Winthrop closed the half with four straight goals to take a 16-2 lead into the break.
To start the second half, the Eagles netted the first three goals, going up 19-2 with 25:40 remaining. Radford responded with three straight of their own, the only three goals they scored in the half and trailed 19-5 with 18:40 on the clock. Winthrop finished the half with seven unanswered goals for the 26-5 victory.
Winthrop finished the contest with 45 points on 26 goals and 19 assists. The Eagles outshot the Highlanders 39-11 and won the ground ball and draw control battles 18-13 and 23-9 respectively.
The Eagles will close out four straight road games on Wednesday with a conference tilt against the Liberty Flames at 4 p.m.
