Winningham Has Five Hits, But Softball Drops Doubleheader At PC

CLINTON, SC— Winthrop dropped a doubleheader with losses of 2-0 and 3-2 at Presbyterian College, Wednesday afternoon in Big South Conference softball action.

The loss drops the Eagles to 10-22 overall and 0-5 in the Big South while PC improves to 17-12 overall and 3-2 in the league. The Eagles will be back in action this weekend as they return home after playing the last 11 games on the road when they host Radford for a three-game series beginning with a single-game on Friday at 5 p.m.

"We got great pitching today," said Winthrop co-head coach Mark Cooke. "I thought all three pitchers threw very well. We had runners in scoring position and didn't drive them in and they did. We hit some balls hard today that unfortunately went right at someone or turned into a double play."

Winthrop trailed 3-0 heading into its final at-bat in the second game of the doubleheader and didn't go down without a fight. With one out, Shayna Covington and Morgan Lowers had back-to-back singles to bring the tying run to the plate. After Paige Haley popped out to the pitcher, Leah Young delivered a two-out double to left center that scored both Covington and Lowers to pull within a run. The rally ended with Megan Winningham's fly out to short left.

Despite pounding out 10 hits the Eagles couldn't get across the plate until the seventh as they ended up leaving eight runners stranded in the game. The Eagles left three on base in the top of the second after Winningham led off with a double. Toni Pancione singled to center with one out to put runners at the corners and then Chace Helms grounded out to put runners at second and third. Brooke Ellison reached first when she was hit by a pitch and then the threat ended with a ground out by Covington.

After having an opportunity to get on the board first in the top of the second, PC took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half as Hope Rogers led off with a single and two batters later scored on Jenna Harris single up the middle.

For the second straight inning, the Eagles led off with a double as Lowers pulled a double down the right field line to start the third. Haley followed with a single to left to place runners at the corners, but then Blue Hose pitcher Katie Brown got the next three batters out to stall the Winthrop offense.

Winthrop had another chance in the fifth with runners at first and second with one out when Young ripped a ball headed down the right field line that was right at the first baseman as she caught the ball for the out and then got Haley off the bag for the double play that ended the inning.

Helms took the loss for the Eagles after allowing three runs on four hits in four innings of work while Keleigh Romine tossed the final two innings allowing just one hit while striking out two. Brown tossed a complete game for the win as she scattered 10 hits allowing two runs while striking out two.

In the first game of the day the Eagles and Blue Hose each had five hits but PC found a way to get two across to earn the 2-0 win. The first run came in the 4th inning when Rogers hit a one-out solo home run to left center.

That score held until the bottom of the sixth when Jordan Ashley came through with two outs with a single over Haley Zuehlke's head at second base, scoring Rogers from third. Megan Anderson led off the inning with a double down the left field line as she ripped the ball by Pancione at third. Rogers drew a walk to put runners at the corners and then a sacrifice moved her to second to have two runners in scoring position. The next batter was Harris and she tried a squeeze play but Haley fielded the bunt cleanly and tagged Anderson at home for the second out. Then Ashley came through with the single that put PC up 2-0.

One of the best chances to score for the Eagles came in the top of the third when Zharne Glover doubled with one out. That was followed by a Lowers single off the glove of the pitcher to put runners at the corners, but Haley grounded out to second and Young popped out to end the threat.

Freshman Kiley Majette pitched a solid game as she allowed the two runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts in six innings of work as she falls to 5-8 on the year. Sydney Seigler earned the win with a complete game shutout allowing the five hits with no walks and four strikeouts as she evens her record to 6-6.

On the day, Winningham finished 5-for-7 at the plate, Lowers had three hits while Covington and Haley each had two.
