Winthrop Season Comes To End With 73-55 First Round Tournament Loss To High Point

Whitaker Sets New First Round Record With 19 Rebounds And Four Blocked Shots

ASHEVILLE, NC.—The Winthrop women's basketball season came to a close Thursday night with a 73-55 loss to No. 6 Seed High Point in the first round of the 2016 Big South Conference Championship Tournament in UNC Asheville's Kimmel Arena.

Winthrop, which has been decimated by injuries this season, played its five starters the entire 40 minutes. The No. 11 seeded Eagles end the season with a 4-26 record while High Point (12-18) advances to Friday night's quarterfinals against No. 3 seed Radford.

The Eagles got a first round record-setting performance from 6-2 freshman center Arianne Whitaker who pulled down 19 rebounds and had four blocked shots, but her performance could not help the Eagles to victory as they shot just 28 percent from the floor (20-71) and made just 11 of 21 free throws.

Winthrop was led in scoring by junior guard Aliyah Kilpatrick, a Second Team All-Big South selection, who finished with a game-high 23 points.  Naima Jackson, a sophomore guard, had her second highest career output with 17.

"I was going to try and go with our five starters for as long as I could," said Winthrop head coach Kevin Cook. "They gave us the best chance to win. There were times when fatigue may have gotten to us, but in the end the ball didn't go in the hole."

The Panthers were led by junior guard Kaylah Keys, also an All-BSC 2nd Round selection, with 22 points.  Joining her in double figures was Lindsey Edwards with 10 points. HPU shot 38 percent for the game (26-69) and converted 16 of 22 from the charity stripe.

"Give a lot of credit to High Point," said Cook. "They are difficult club to defend.  They do a good job of spreading you out, but I am very proud of my team.  All five (starters) went the distance and Aliyah battled her behind off.  We have asked Aliyah to do a lot of things this season—not only be our best defender, but also our best scorer. "

Winthrop had its only lead just under four minutes into the game when Kilpatrick drove the lane for a short bank shot to put the Eagles up 7-5, but Hatfield answered 13 seconds later with a 3-pointer to put High Point on top to stay.

The Panthers closed the first quarter on an 8-2 run in the last two minutes to go up 19-11.  The lead swelled to 13 in the first 4:30 of the second quarter as Winthrop went on a scoring drought of five minutes and 34-seconds and trailed 26-13 before Arianne Whitaker scored in the paint to make it an 11-point game.

High Point led by as much as 17 points twice in the first half. Keys knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Panthers a 33-16 lead at the 2:53 mark and Emma Bockrath scored on a three-point play with 30 seconds left to put the Panthers up 38-21 before Kilpatrick converted two free throws to close out the first half.

High Point extended the margin to as much as 23 points at 51-28 with 1:47 left in the third quarter and led 53-34 heading into the final period. Winthrop refused to quit and whittled the deficit down to 11 points at 66-55 with 2:02 left in the game when Kilpatrick connected on a 3-pointer.
