Softball Drops Two On Final Day Of Carolina Classic

Eagles Will Host Winthrop/adidas Tournament Next Weekend To Begin 11-Game Homestand

COLUMBIA, SC—Winthrop softball wrapped up the Carolina Classic on Sunday with losses to Ohio and the host South Carolina.

Winthrop falls to 3-7 on the year after falling 5-1 to Ohio and 7-1 to South Carolina. The Bobcats improve to 3-1 on the year while the Gamecocks are now 8-1 after their eighth straight win. Winthrop returns home as it will host the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational Feb. 26-27 as it faces Brown at 3 p.m. and Towson at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26.

"We had the worst luck on fielding bunts today that led to too many runs," said Winthrop co-head coach Mark Cooke. "We might have too many first year players out there as their struggling to make quick decisions. Kiley (Majette) threw well in both games. We're happy this part of the schedule is over as we return home this coming weekend and really look forward to playing there."

Winthrop opened the day with the loss to Ohio as the game away with a three-run fourth. Freshman Majette hit the leadoff batter, but got the next batter to ground out putting the leadoff batter Mikayla Cooper at second. After Cooper stole third, Amanda Dalton came through with an RBI single to left center. Sloan Walker laid down a bunt for a single but Paige Haley's errant throw allowed Dalton and Walker to both come around to score.

Leah Young made it 4-1 in the sixth when she plated Shayna Covington with a ground out to the pitcher. Covington led off the inning with a triple down the left field line, the first triple of her career. K.J. Uyeno followed with a walk and moved to second after a Morgan Lowers single to left, but Blake Wallert popped out to end the threat.

Majette tossed a complete game allowing four earned runs (five runs) on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts to fall to 1-3 on the year. Danielle Stiene tossed six innings allowing one run on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts to improve to 2-0 for Ohio.

In the loss to South Carolina the Eagles fell behind 6-0 after the first. The Gamecocks took advantage of a fielding error that would have ended the inning with the Eagles down 3-0. The error put runners at the corners and Krystan White stepped up and hit a 2-0 pitch over the fence in left for a 6-0 lead.

Winthrop got on the board in the fourth and had a chance to add more, but an inning-ending double play kept it a 7-1 game. Uyeno led off the inning by drawing a walk and then moved to second and then third on wild pitches. Wallert also drew a walk and then moved to second on a wild pitch while Uyeno came scored on the wild pitch. Tara Loken walked to put runners at first and second and then Wallert moved to third on a wild pitch. Toni Pancione stepped up to the plate as a pinch-hitter and was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The Gamecocks made a pitching change as Jessica Elliott, who started the game and was replaced after just one inning, came back and got out of the jam. Brooke Ellison struck out and then Zharne Glover hit into a double play as she lined out to right and Wallert was thrown out trying to score on the play.

Dallas King started in the circle for the Eagles and took the loss after allowing six runs on five hits, no walks and strikeout as she's now 2-3 on the year. Majette threw five innings of relief allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and a strikeout. Elliot earned the win for the Gamecocks as she totaled 4.0 innings allowing no runs on three hits with three strikeouts and is now 5-0.

Wallert did single in the second against Ohio to extend her hitting streak to a career-best five games against and has now reached base in six straight games while Uyeno also has a streak of six straight reaching base.
