ROCK HILL, SC—A solid pitching outing from Zach Sightler backed by an explosive offense from the Eagles led Winthrop to a 9-0 triumph over LaSalle Sunday afternoon, giving the Eagles a sweep of the four-game series.
Sightler's first appearance of the season was one to remember as he had a perfect game going into the 9th inning. The senior right-hander only allowed one hit all afternoon combined with four strikeouts.
Jace Whitley once again propelled the Eagles to an early 1-0 lead over the Explorers with an RBI single sending Anthony Paulsen home in the 1st inning.
Winthrop's Tyler Asbill led off the 3rd inning with a double, putting him in scoring position for Babe Thomas to send him home with a double of his own the following at bat to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Paulsen kept the rally going sending Thomas home with a triple. The momentum for the Eagles didn't stop there, as Gonzalez connected for his seventh RBI of the season extending the lead to 4-0.
Mark Lowrie connected for his second double of the series sending Gonzalez in widening Winthrop's lead to 5-0 in the 5th inning.
LaSalle's right handed reliever Greg Paprocki loaded the bases for the Eagles in the bottom of the 7th inning. After Lowrie walked and another run came home, Mitch Spires sent a ball deep into center field for a three run double increasing Winthrop's lead to 9-0.
The Eagles, 4-0, will be back in action this Tuesday, Feb. 23 when they host The Citadel at the Winthrop Ballpark beginning at 4:00 pm.
