ATHENS, GA—Winthrop softball dropped its final game of the Red & Black Showcase with an 11-0 loss at #12/13 Georgia, Sunday afternoon.
Winthrop is now 0-4 on the season while the Bulldogs remain unbeaten at 4-0. Winthrop will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 18 when it hosts Humber College for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. in the home opener.
"Today was a 180 degree turn around from the rest of the weekend," said Winthrop co-head coach
Mark Cooke. "I feel a lot better coming away today than I did the first two days and we showed signs of improvement and look to build on this. The first two days we were behind in about 90 percent of the batters we faced and today that happened just six times."
Winthrop fell behind 3-0 in the first as they took advantage of a fielding error as Alex Hugo delivered a two-run double. The Bulldogs had a big third inning, posting five runs behind a three-run home run from Kaylee Puailoa.
Georgia's Brittany Gray held the Eagles to two hits, issuing one walk and striking out nine. Winthrop's
Dallas King suffered the loss in the circle as she falls to 0-2 on the year after allowing six earned runs on six hits in two innings.
Winthrop threatened to spoil the shutout in the top of the fifth as
Lacy Adams led off with a pinch-hit single to left and was sacrificed over to second. After
Brooke Ellison flew out to left before
Paige Haley singled to third base to put runners at the corners. However, Gray got
Shayna Covington swinging to end the game on an 0-2 count. Haley has now reached base in the last two games.
