ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop placed six players in double-figures as it captured a 106-63 victory over Greensboro College, Tuesday evening at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Keon Johnson led the way with 20 points, his second consecutive game with at least 20 points, while
Josh Ferguson,
Xavier Cooks and
Tevin Prescott had 13 points apiece.
Adam Pickett and
Joshua Davenport each finished with 11 points.
Winthrop is now 5-3 on the year and will 10 days between games as it gets back to action after exams on Saturday, Dec. 17 at Hampton with a 2 p.m. tip.
In addition to his 13 points, Ferguson led the Eagles with a career-high eight rebounds while Pickett had a career-high six steals.
The Eagles finished the game shooting 53 percent from the field as they reached 100 points for the first time this season and the first time since their 116-84 win over the University of Rio Grande (OH) on Dec. 28, 2015. The Eagles were 11-for-27 behind the arc and 11-for-16 at the foul line.
Defense led to a number of scoring opportunities as Winthrop forced 28 turnovers which led to a 35-18 advantage in points off turnovers. Winthrop finished the game with a season-high 20 steals, which were one shy of the school record of 21 which was accomplished by the 1979-80 and 1985-86 teams.
Winthrop built a 54-26 halftime lead behind a couple of big runs and never looked back. The Eagles led 23-18 after Dominic Fumbanks connected on a three-pointer with 12:03 left in the half.
Adam Pickett ignited the run with three straight layups followed by a Prescott dunk. Pickett then drilled a three to make it 11 straight points and
Anders Broman capped it off with a layup. Three of the layups came off steals on the other end.
Over the final 4:41 of the half the Eagles outscored The Pride 11-0 that started with a Johnson triple followed by back-to-back dunks from Davenport and Ferguson. Winthrop shot 52 percent from the floor (3-for-11 from three) while turning 19 turnovers into 26 points in the first half while Greensboro College shot 37 percent floor and 2-for-10 from three.
The Pride finished the game shooting 40 percent as Donavan Griffith led the way with a game-high 26 points on 11-for-18 shooting. He was the only Greensboro College player in double-figures as Alvin Cunningham Jr. had nine and Joseph Gatling chipped in with eight.
