ROCK HILL, SC—The fall semester has come to a close and the Winthrop men's basketball team gets back to action after a long break when it heads to Hampton, VA on Dec. 17 to take on Hampton at 2 p.m.

Winthrop last played Dec. 6 in a 106-63 victory over Greensboro College to improve to 5-3 on the year. It is the longest break between games since the 2013-14 season when the Eagles had 11 days between games over the exam period. Fans can catch the action by turning into 104.1 The Bridge as Dave Friedman will provide the play-by-play.

The Eagles hit the century mark for the 6th time under head coach Pat Kelsey as they were 11-for-27 from three and placed six players in double-figures. It was the 36th time the Eagles have hit 10 or more threes in a game since the start of the 2012-13 season. Winthrop has now won 19 of its last 25 contests.

Senior Keon Johnson scored 20 points in 23 minutes to lead the way for the Eagles as he's scored 20 or more points in back-to-back games and now leads the team in scoring at 17.9 ppg. Johnson is shooting 44 percent from the floor and leads the Big South in free throw shooting percentage (.931). He also leads the team in assists per game at 2.6.

Only one other player is averaging double-figures for the Winthrop offense that is scoring 77.6 ppg as junior Xavier Cooks averages 16.8 ppg. Cooks is shooting 52 percent from the floor and leading the team with 6.0 rpg and 10 steals. Senior Tevin Prescott has stepped up his production in the last five games averaging 8.6 points and 5.2 rebounds while shooting 74 percent from the floor.

This will mark the 6th meeting between Winthrop and Hampton as the Eagles lead the series 3-2 and won the last meeting on Nov. 14, 2015 at home, 102-95. The Eagles have lost their only visit to the Convocation Center when they fell 101-95 in double-overtime on Dec. 29, 2013.

The Pirates enter the game with a 2-7 record and are coming off a 69-63 at Gardner-Web on Dec. 7. Since opening the season with two home games, Hampton has since been on the road for six of the last seven games. In their last home game, the Pirates defeated William & Mary 79-69 behind 27 points from Jermaine Marrow and 23 points from Lawrence Cooks.

Marrow leads the team in scoring at 14.7 per game as he's shooting 36 percent from the floor, is second on the team with 13 threes and is shooting 68 percent at the foul line. Cooks is second on the team in scoring at 11.4 ppg as he's shooting 38 percent from the floor, has a team-best 17 made threes and is shooting 80 percent at the free throw line. A.J. Astroth is the third Pirate averaging double-figures at 10.1 ppg. He missed the games against Robert Morris and Stony Brook but leads the team with 8.7 rpg and has good size in the post (averaging 3.3 offensive rebounds per game).
