ROCK HILL, SC—Anders Broman's three with 1.4 seconds left in overtime lifted Winthrop to a 58-57 victory over Furman, Wednesday evening in non-conference men's basketball action.
Winthrop is now 4-2 on the year and will be back in action on the road Saturday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. when it takes on Dayton. The loss drops Furman to 3-4.
The Paladins had just grabbed a 57-55 lead when Daniel Fowler drove the lane and banked in a short jumper with 20.2 seconds left. Winthrop called timeout to set up a play for
Keon Johnson, but as he drove to the basket two Furman defenders closed in and he tossed the ball back out toward the three-point line. Broman raced over, grabbed the loose ball and squared up as he let a shot fly near the top of the key and it banked in with 1.4 seconds left.
Broman was one of three Eagles in double-figures with 12 points as
Xavier Cooks led Winthrop with 14 and
Tevin Prescott added 10. Broman finished the game 4-for-8 from the floor (all shots behind the arc). Cooks also led the team with eight rebounds, five assists and a career-high four steals.
Furman led by five with 8:16 to play as the Eagles turned a second chance opportunity into points when Cooks finished inside to ignite a 6-0 spurt. Furman answered with a basket inside by Matt Rafferty, but the Eagles cut the deficit back to one on a
Duby Okeke dunk. Once again Furman answered as John Davis hit a jumper and
Joshua Davenport came right back down the court to make it a one-point game as he drove and finished with a strong dunk.
The Eagles got the stop they needed defensively and
Bjorn Broman drilled a three from the wing as Cooks found him open for a 48-46 lead. Rafferty tied the game with just over 30 seconds to play on a base line jumper. Winthrop had a look to win the game in the final seconds by Prescott's short jumper wouldn't fall.
Both teams got after it defensively as the Paladins built a 25-21 lead at the break despite shooting 32 percent from the floor. Winthrop shot just 27 percent in the first half and committed 12 turnovers, but were able to hold Furman to just eight points off the miscues.
Devin Sibley led all scorers with 21 points as he was 7-for-13 from the floor and also pulled down six rebounds. Davis finished with 10 points while Geoff Beans had eight points and 10 boards.
Winthrop held Furman to 38 percent shooting in the game and 23 percent behind the arc (5-for-22) as the Paladins entered the game averaging 11.2 triples per game. The Eagles shot 39 percent from the floor and 31 percent from three (8-for-26).
