Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eagles No Match Against No. 10 Florida State as They Fall 98-35 in Paradise Jam

ST. THOMAS, USVI—The Winthrop women's basketball team was no match for No. 10 Florida State as the Eagles fell 98-35 to the Seminoles in the opening round of the 2016 Paradise Jam.

Winthrop is now 1-4 and will face Michigan at 8 p.m. on Friday night in the second round before meeting No. 25 Gonzaga on Saturday.

Going into the game Winthrop was hoping to cut down on turnovers and make more of its shots, two areas the Eagles have struggled with in the early going this season.  They could achieve neither as Winthrop committed a season-high 34 turnovers and connected on 34 percent from the floor (14-41)).  Florida State turned the Eagle turnovers into 40 points in route to setting a new Paradise Jam single scoring mark.

"Florida State is ranked No. 10 in the nation for a reason," said Winthrop head coach Kevin Cook.  "We turned it over way too many times, but we are not going to face many teams with the speed of Florida State.  We never hung our heads and we never quit.  We are a young team and we are going to get better."

The Seminoles connected on 40 of 65 shots, many of those coming off layups as a result of 18 steals.  FSU opened up by connecting on its first four field goal attempts to take a 9-2 lead.  The Seminoles led 30-13 after the first quarter and expanded the lead to 37 at halftime (53-16).

Senior forward Erica Williams was the only Winthrop player to reach double figures as she finished with 12 points.  Leticia Romero led four FSU players in double figures as she finished with 17 points while Jasmine Walker finished with 14 and Ivey Slaughter added 13.  All 13 Seminole players who played got into the scoring column.
