ROCK HILL, SC—Fresh off its first Big South Conference win, Winthrop men's soccer will host Longwood, Saturday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. in its final contest of the season.
There will be a "Senior Night" ceremony prior to kickoff to recognize

Hector Fernandez,
Marco Gatzke and
Pietro Bottari.The game will air on the Big South Network.
The Eagles held on for a 1-0 victory over Gardner-Webb at home this past Wednesday and are now 4-10-1 overall and 1-6 in the Big South. Freshman
Jogvan Jacobsen scored the lone goal in the win, his first collegiate goal. He is now second on the team in scoring with six points (leads team with four assists) behind junior
Rasmus Arousell (12 points). Junior
Kenneth Perkinson recorded four saves to earn his second shutout as an Eagle.
It will be just the 10
th meeting all-time between the two schools and the fifth since the Lancers joined the Big South. Winthrop is 8-1 all-time against Longwood, with the only loss coming three seasons ago in Farmville, 2-1. The last three meetings in this series have been decided by a single-goal.
Longwood is coming off a 1-0 loss at league-leading Radford and is 5-10-1 on the year and 2-4 in the Big South. The loss was the second straight for the Lancers.
Max Poelker leads the team in scoring with six goals and three assists (15 points) while Finnlay Wyatt is second with five goals and four assists (14 points). Carlos Canas has 12 starts for the Lancers as he is 5-6-1 on the year with a 1.26 goals against average.
2016 Senior Class
Marco Gatzke, Midfielder (Nottuin, Germany)
Gatzke has played in 35 games with 34 starts in his two seasons with the Eagles. He has two goals and nine assists as he led the team in assists in 2015 with six. He was a starter for the 2015 Big South Conference Championship team. He will earn his master's in business administration.
Hector Fernandez, Goalkeeper (Weston, FL)
Fernandez has seen action in nine games as an Eagle with eight starts and holds a career record of 5-4. This season he earned his first collegiate shutout making four saves to hold Wofford College scoreless. This season he's made two starts and has a 0.48 goals against average with six saves in two games. Fernandez will graduate with a degree in international business.
Pietro Bottari, Defender (Greenville, SC)
Bottari has seen action in 53 career games with 38 starts and has a total of three points. He had an assist in each of his first three seasons as an Eagle. He was a member of the 2015 Big South Championship team and in his four seasons the team has 39 wins. He played 45 minutes in the 2015 College Cup at Elon. He earned All-Tournament Team honors at the 2013 Big South/SoCON Challenge. He will graduate with a degree in international business.
James Skonicki, Midfielder (Largo, FL)
Skonicki started 12-of-13 games this season before suffering a knee injury that will keep him out for the remainder of games. During his career he's played multiple positions and from his midfield position this year he's scored a career-high three goals. He was a starting defender for the 2015 Big South Championship team. He has four career goals and three assists in 55 games played. Skonicki is the youngest of three brothers that have played for the Winthrop men's soccer program and he also became the third to win a conference title. He will graduate with a degree in exercise science. |
