Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Jacobsen, Perkinson Lead Men's Soccer To 1-0 Victory Over Gardner-Webb

ROCK HILL, SC—Jogvan Jacobsen's goal in the 42nd minute proved to be the game-winner as Winthrop defeated Gardner-Webb 1-0, Wednesday evening in Big South Conference men's soccer action.

The victory ends a seven-game losing streak for the Eagles, who are now 4-10-1 overall and 1-6 in the league. Gardner-Webb falls to 4-15 on the year and 3-7 in the Big South. Winthrop will wrap-up the season on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. when it hosts Longwood for "Senior Day".

"Excited for all of the team, every player," said Winthrop head coach Daniel Ridenhour. "It's been a rough couple of weeks with results not going our way. Tonight fortune was on our side. We were a little bit lucky toward the end with a tremendous save with I think 2-3 seconds on the clock with Kenneth Perkinson. It's a game we needed to win at home, we had not won at home yet only playing five home games and that's been a challenge for us for the year. The last week's ben really good in training and overall excited for the guys to get a result."

Gardner-Webb made it an exciting finish as Magnus Moldjord let a shot fly from the top of the box that forced Winthrop goalkeeper Kenneth Perkinson into a diving save as he tipped the ball wide and it even caught the outside of the post as time expired.

Winthrop grabbed the lead before halftime as it worked the ball through the midfield with quick passes and Marco Gatzke set up Jacobsen with a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and he slipped a shot by for his first of the season.

The Eagles finished with an 11-8 advantage in shots and a 5-3 advantage in corners. Perkinson finished with four saves as he recorded his second shutout of the season. Gardner-Webb's Matthew Swan made five saves.
