ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop men's soccer dropped a hard fought battle 2-1 in double overtime against High Point, Wednesday evening in Big South Conference action.
The loss is the sixth straight for the Eagles as they fall to 3-9-1 overall and 0-5 in the Big South while High Point improves to 9-3-2 on the year and 3-1 in the league. Winthrop will be back on the road for its next contest when it travels to Asheville, NC Saturday, Oct. 22 to take on UNC Asheville at 6:30 p.m.
Both teams battled back-and-forth with scoring opportunities in the overtime periods before the Panthers were able to draw a penalty kick in the 101
st minute. A ball was served into the box and Siggi Benonysson drew a foul in the box to set up the golden goal as Chris Ramsell converted for his eighth of the season.
"Absolutely devastating result for our guys," said Winthrop head coach
Daniel Ridenhour. "Overall I thought we played a tremendous game defensively and created chances going forward. Overtime losses are always tough and this one stings because the way we lost. High Point is a very athletic and powerful team that made things very difficult for us. They are certainly a team that can score goals and I felt like we did a good job at nullifying some of their attack tonight. The game can be very cruel, but I'm very proud of all the guys that played the support we had on the bench. It was a really positive effort overall."
The Panthers drew first blood in the 71
st minute when Benonysson netted his 10
th of the year. Renato Punyed played a ball wide to Erien Campbell, who then found Benonysson at the back post for a close range shot into the open net.
The Eagles answered in the 78
th minute when their top goal scorer came through.
Jogvan Jacobsen played a ball into open space down the left side as
Nil Vinyals ran on and then served a ball to the back post where
Rasmus Arousell was there to head it home for his fifth of the year.
Kenneth Perkinson finished with four saves for the Eagles while High Point's Keegan Meyer finished with two.
