GREENVILLE, SC – Lourdes Rosario notched a double-double Friday evening and the Eagles tallied 15 total team blocks but were unable to earn the team's first victory of the season as Winthrop fell 3-1 to the Furman Paladins on the first day of the Carolina Classic.
Rosario totaled 14 kills and 12 digs while Annelies Dokter also notched double-digit kills with 13. Madilyn McCarty finished with 35 assists and Maria Volstad totaled 14 digs. McCarty along with Rachel Lenz and Brianna Gray all totaled six blocks as part of 15 total team blocks.
Winthrop (0-5) dropped the first set after holding the early lead. The two sides battled back and forth through the middle of the set but Furman was able to use a 10-4 run to close the set and win 25-19.
The Eagles grabbed the second set in similar fashion. Winthrop led by one at 13-12 but went on a 7-2 run, to open a 20-14 lead and went on to take the second set 25-18.
The third set was another close affair. The Eagles led 14-13, but a quick 5-0 spurt by the Paladins gave them an 18-14 edge. Winthrop was only able to get back within three, before dropping the third set 25-20.
Furman led throughout the fourth set and used a 6-0 run to turn a three-point edge into a 15-6 lead. The Paladins didn't look back, cruising to a 25-14, fourth-set victory.
Winthrop will return to the court on Saturday, facing South Carolina at 12:30 followed by a 4:30 p.m. contest against Clemson.
