ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team will be in search of its first win of the season this weekend as the Eagles head to Greenville, SC to take mark in the Carolina Classic, facing in-state rivals Furman, South Carolina and Clemson.
The Eagles are coming off a four-set loss to USC Upstate Tuesday night. Freshman Lourdes Rosario has been a bright spot on offense for Winthrop so far this season, averaging better than 3.5 kills per set. The Eagles have been starting a freshman setter in Madilyn McCarty as she is averaging just shy of 10 assists per set.
Friday evening at 7 p.m. the Eagles will face the host, Furman Paladins. Furman sports a 1-2 record, picking up a victory over Western Michigan last weekend. Junior Annie Bierman, the SOCON Offensive Player of the Week, averaged nearly five kills per set in the team's three matches last weekend.
The Eagles will return to the court Saturday at 12:30 p.m. to take on the Gamecocks. South Carolina is 2-1 on the season with victories over Southeastern Louisiana and NC Central with a loss to NC State. Junior Dessaa Legros has been the primary offensive force for the Gamecocks, totaling 38 kills through three matches.
Clemson will be Winthrop's final opponent, Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. The Tigers are 1-2 on the season, falling to UNC Wilmington and Appalachian State and picking up a victory over Charleston Southern. Junior Leah Perri and freshman Kailey Harvell lead the Tigers on offense with 37 and 31 kills respectively through three contests.
Winthrop will have the week off from competition before returning to play next Friday, September 11 when it heads to Georgia Southern to participate in the Battle in the 'Boro. The Eagles will face Chicago State, Tennessee State and the host Eagles.
