Box Score Boiling Springs, NC —The Winthrop Lady Eagles' soccer team defeated the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs 2-1 for their first Big South victory Saturday night at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
 
The first half began with both teams getting early chances on goal, forcing each other's goalkeepers to make a save.  The match was quickly opened up to 1-0 when Gardner-Webb's Justine Ibarra scored in the 12^th minute, assisted by Brandi Arey and Sam Grove.  
 
It continued to go Gardner-Webb's way as they had a flurry of shots forcing Caroline Duncan to seven saves in the first half.  However, the Lady Eagles turned things around when Lauren Watts beat the keeper off a corner kick from Zoe Conover equalizing the match in the 36^th minute.  Momentum continued Winthrop's way when Taylor Coleman scored off a break away minutes later in the 39^th minute. The Lady Eagles entered the half with a 2-1 lead.
 
The second half started with Ibarra getting several looks at goal for Gardner-Webb.  Moments later Taylor Coleman once again had an opportunity to score but fired the ball over the net.  The teams continued to trade shots as the Runnin' Bulldogs pushed for a late equalizer and the Lady Eagles attempted to stretch the lead.
 
In the end Winthrop's defense proved to be too much for Gardner-Webb as they held their lead to a 2-1 victory.  The Lady Eagles reached this triumph despite being outshot 19-12 with five of their 12 on goal.  Duncan finished with eight saves on the night for Winthrop.
 
Winthrop, 4-4-1, 1-1 BSC, will return home for a match against Longwood this Wednesday starting at 7:00 p.m. at Eagle Field.
