Eagle Volleyball Opens Conference Play Hosting Coastal and Charleston Southern This Weekend

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team opens conference play this weekend at the Winthrop Coliseum, hosting Coastal Carolina Friday and Charleston Southern Saturday.

LAST WEEKEND
The Eagles hosted the Winthrop Invitational last weekend, falling to West Virginia, Murray State and Davidson over the two-day tournament.  Annelies Dokter was named to the All-Tournament Team after notching two double-doubles with 34 kills and 30 digs over the three matches.  Brianna Gray also had a strong tournament defensively, totaling 14 blocks and also adding 20 kills.

ABOUT COASTAL CAROLINA
The Chanticleers are off to an 8-4 start this season and are coming off a 3-1 victory over South Carolina on Tuesday evening.  Coastal has been on the road for all but one of its matches this season.  Sophomore Leah Hardeman leads the team with 160 kills, an average of nearly four kills per set.  Aleksandra Djuric and Sara Booth have split the setter duties, averaging around six assists per set each. 

ABOUT CHARLESTON SOUTHERN
The Buccaneers enter the weekend with a 4-12 record and will play at Presbyterian on Friday evening.  Charleston swept past Savannah State on Monday but previously had not won a contest since September 5, a three set victory over NC Central.  Senior Meredith Parrott and freshman Addison Kaderli have led the team offensively with 150 and 147 kills respectively.  Sophomore Kylie Klein has been strong at the net defensively, totaling 63 blocks through 16 matches.

SERIES HISTORIES
Winthrop holds a 47-32 series lead over the Chanticleers as the Eagles won both matches over Coastal last season.  Against Charleston Southern, the Eagles hold a 64-16 lead and won both matches last season.

UP NEXT
Following the conference-opening weekend, the Eagles will close out their six-match home stand with a non-conference contest on Tuesday against Charlotte at 7 p.m.
