Box Score ROCK HILL, SC—The Charlotte 49ers proved to be too much to handle Wednesday night as they handed the Winthrop Lady Eagles their first loss of the season in a 2-0 defeat at Eagle Field.
Charlotte outshot Winthrop 18-3, including 9-0 shots on goal. The visitors from Conference USA jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at the 23rd minute mark when Rebecca Beatty scored. The 49ers extended the lead to 2-0 at the 62nd minute mark on a goal by Martha Thomas.
Karly Gustafson, making her first start of the season, was very active protecting the goal with seven saves and was indeed a bright spot for the Lady Eagles. The junior from Fayetteville, N.C., knocked back several hard hits from the 49ers and was a main reason Winthrop was able to stay in the contest. Charlotte's offense put pressure on the Lady Eagle defense throughout the evening and eventually was the deciding factor in the outcome of the match.
Winthrop, 1-1-1, will return to action next Wednesday when they travel to face Georgia Southern beginning at 6:00 pm. Charlotte improves to 3-1 on the season and will host Gardner Webb this Friday at 7:00 pm.
