ROCK HILL, SC—Megan David had her first career multi-goal game to help lead the Winthrop women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over The Citadel, Friday evening at Eagle Field.
With the victory the Eagles even their season record to 3-3-1 overall while the Bulldogs fall to 1-8. Winthrop will look for two straight wins when it hosts UNC Asheville in its Big South Conference opener on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m.
It was
Courtney McLeod that provided the game-winning goal for the Eagles as she netted her first of the season in the seventh minute. A ball was served into the box and dropped into a crowd of players as McLeod poked at the ball and eventually came away with it as she fired a shot into the net just inside the six for the goal.
David added two late second half goals that provided some breathing room as The Citadel threatened to tie the match on a couple of occasions. David's first came in the 72
nd minute when she headed home a service from
Mia Schreibeis. She added her second in the 86
th minute when
Lauren Kelly played a pass in front on the ground and David hit it first time into the lower left corner.
Caroline Duncan made five saves to earn her first career shutout. The biggest save came just after the Eagles took a 1-0 lead when Ana Da Costa was set up on a breakaway. As Da Costa made her way into the box, Duncan closed out and tipped the shot wide.
The Eagles finished with a 22-9 advantage in shots but the Bulldogs had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Kim Mora made three saves for The Citadel while Emilie Valenciano and Kim Maldonaldo led the team with two shots each.
