Box Score 2 STATESBORO, GA – The Winthrop volleyball team picked up its first two victories of the season Friday, downing Chicago State and Georgia Southern on the first day of the Bash in the 'Boro.
In the first match of the day, the Eagles didn't trail against Chicago State until the third set. The two sides were even through the first 18 points of the opening set. Winthrop then went on a 6-0 run, taking a 15-9 edge and took the first set 25-18.
The second set was again close early with Winthrop leading 12-10, but the Eagles were able to go on a 10-1 run, opening a 22-11 edge, and took the set win 25-16. While Winthrop did trail briefly in the third set, after a 10-10 tie, the Eagles allowed Chicago State only six more points, taking the third set 25-16.
Annelies Dokter led the Eagles with 11 kills while Carlie Skelton totaled 13 digs and Madilyn McCarty had 29 assists.
Against the host Georgia Southern Eagles, Winthrop dropped the first set. After trailing early, Georgia Southern was able to respond and control the play, taking the first set 25-21. In the second set Winthrop again got out to the early lead and then was in a back-and-forth battle but was able to come out on top for the 25-23 victory.
Winthrop was able to dominate the third set, leading throughout, en route to a 25-18 victory. In the fourth set, Georgia Southern looked to be ready for a fifth, controlling the majority of the set. Winthrop, however, was able to make a late rally and take the set 26-24.
Lourdes Rosario led all hitters with 21 kills while Brianna Gray and Emma Weakland each contributed 10. Rosario notched a double-double by also adding 12 digs. Skelton led the Eagles with 20 digs while McCarty finished with 53 assists.
The Eagles will finish the Bash in the 'Boro Saturday at 12 p.m. against Tennessee State.
