Eagles Travel To Georgia Southern Tournament Looking For First Victory This Weekend

ROCK HILL, SC – Looking for its first victory of the season, the Winthrop volleyball team will head to Statesboro, GA this weekend to participate in the Bash in the 'Boro hosted by Georgia Southern.

The Eagles will play two matches on Friday in this weekend's tournament with a 2 p.m. contest against Chicago State and a 7 p.m. matchup against the host Eagles.  Saturday, Winthrop will play a noon contest against Tennessee State.

Winthrop has struggled to find consistency on offense, hitting only .188 on the season.  Freshman Lourdes Rosario and junior Annelies Dokter have led the Eagles offensively.  Rosario is third in the conference and first amongst freshmen in kills, averaging 3.41 per set.  Dokter has totaled 70 kills this season, an average of 2.50 per set.

The Cougars of Chicago State also enter the weekend looking for their first win with a current 0-6 mark.  The Cougars have won only one set through six matches this year.  Junior Elli Woinowsky and sophomore Arieta Vaimaona are tied for the team lead with 47 kills each.  Chicago State has hit only .109 this season.

Georgia Southern comes into the tournament with a 3-4 overall mark, picking up a victory over Georgia and falling to Kennesaw State and Georgia Tech last weekend.  Freshman Stephanie Spencer leads the Eagles offensively, averaging better than three kills per set.  Georgia Southern has been especially strong defensively this year, holding opponents to a .173 attack percentage and has three players with 20 or more blocks.

Tennessee State is also winless on the season through four matches.  The Tigers played last Saturday, falling in five sets at home to Samford.  Juniors Chloe Watson and Arijana Anderson are tied for the team lead in kills with 44 each.  Tiger opponents this season have hit an average of .317 per match.

Winthrop will close out its season-opening road swing on Tuesday when they head to Durham, NC to take on NC Central.
