Men's Soccer Hosts Wofford College Sunday Evening

Eagles Look For 2-0 Start For 3rd Straight Season

ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop men's soccer will look for a 2-0 start to the season as it hosts Wofford College, Sunday evening at 7 p.m. on Eagle Field.

Winthrop opened the season with a 3-2 victory over Brevard College on Friday for its sixth straight victory in a season opener. Wofford College is coming off a victory in its first game as well when it handed fellow Big South Conference foe Gardner-Webb a 3-0 loss in Spartanburg, SC.

The Eagles goals came from an unusual source against Brevard as senior defender Jordi Lluch netted his first and second career goals when he headed home a corner kick service twice. Winthrop was able to get a lot of players into the game as Lluch and starting keeper Fabian Broich were the only two players to see action in the full 90 minutes as 20 different players saw at least 10 or more minutes.

The Terriers led 2-0 at the break and scored a third goal in the 57th minute as insurance. Wofford had three different goal scorers as Nestor Jaramillo, Will Puckett and Connor Donohue all found the back of the net. Junior Joe Wichmann made two saves to earn the shutout.

Sunday's game will mark the 34th meeting all-time between Winthrop and Wofford as the Eagles hold a 24-7-2 mark in the all-time series. While the Eagles have won four straight over Wofford, all of the games were decided by one goal.

In last year's meeting the difference in the game was a Jordan Stoddart goal in the 49th minute as Fabian Broich made four saves as the Eagles won 1-0.

The game is scheduled to air on the Big South Network.
