ROCK HILL, SC—Former Winthrop outfielder
John Menken has signed a contract to play for the Schaumburg Boomers of the Frontier League.
Menken, 22, a native of nearby Bartlett, IL, and a South Elgin High School graduate, joined the Boomers last Friday and got off to a hot start in his professional debut against the Evansville Otters. He collected four hits, including a triple and a double, and drove home three runs to lead the Boomers to a 7-4 victory.
The 6-3, 220 pound outfielder posted a .283 batting average with 14 extra base hits and 31 RBIs in 44 games during his senior year at Winthrop. Prior to his two-year stint with Winthrop, Menken played for Elgin Community College in 2013 and Southern Illinois University in 2012.
"I am extremely excited for John," said Winthrop head coach Tom Rijinos. "He worked extremely hard this summer to get this opportunity with the Schaumburg Boomers. I believe John has a bright future in professional baseball."
