ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team will battle the High Point Panthers Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the semifinals of the Big South Tournament at Eagle Field.
The top-seeded Eagles and the fourth-seeded Panthers will meet for the second time in only eight days and for the second straight year in the conference semifinals.
Winthrop advanced to the tournament semifinals with a 21-5 victory over the eighth-seeded Presbyterian Blue Hose Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday's victory was the 15th on the season for the Eagles and set a new Big South record for single-season wins.
The Eagles were led Tuesday by junior Shannon Gallagher's tournament-record eight goals including four ground balls and five caused turnovers. Senior Jenna Kasmairk and freshman Allie Yeager each scored four times while junior Abigail Blevins tallied three goals.
High Point won its quarterfinal contest 14-9 over the fifth-seeded Longwood Lancers. Sophomore Samantha Brown scored a career-high five goals in the victory.
Winthrop and the Panthers met in the final regular season game on April 24 in High Point. High Point took home an 8-7 victory in overtime. Panther goalie Julia Burns posted 14 saves while Winthrop's freshman goalie Alaina Girani made nine saves.
Friday's contest will be the fifth meeting between the two schools in the three-year existence of Winthrop lacrosse and the Eagles are currently winless against the Panthers.
The winner of Friday's matchup will face the winner of the #2/3 contest between Liberty and Coastal Carolina which will be played at 7 p.m. at Eagle Field on Friday. Sunday's championship will be 1 p.m. at Eagle Field and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
