ROCK HILL, SC – Freshman goalie Alaina Girani recorded 10 saves Sunday afternoon as the Winthrop lacrosse team downed the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 12-4, extending its win streak to five games.
Winthrop improved to 4-0 in the Big South and 12-2 overall while Coastal Carolina fell to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Freshman Katie Clark grabbed the first goal of the game for the Eagles 2:19 into the contest. Coastal tied the game with 18:38 remaining on a tally from Sara Nolan. The game remained tied at 1-1 until Jenna Kasmarik broke the deadlock with 9:48 on the clock on a free-position attempt.
Kasmarik gave the Eagles a two-goal cushion just over four minutes later on a helper from Logan McCarthy. Shannon Gallagher and Abigail Blevins each scored in the final four minutes to give the Eagles a 5-1 halftime lead.
Coastal tried to grab momentum early in the second half as the Chanticleers scored the first two goals and got within 5-3 with just under 20 minutes remaining in the contest.
Winthrop responded in a big way, scoring the next seven goals. Abigail Blevins got the Eagles run going followed by two goals from Logan McCarthy. Gallagher, Kasmarik, McCarthy and Danielle Ellis each tallied a goal in the run for the Eagles, putting Winthrop up 12-3. Coastal grabbed its final goal with 3:16 remaining to reach the 12-4 final.
Logan McCarthy totaled four points Sunday with three goals and one assist while Jenna Kasmarik also tallied three goals. Shannon Gallagher and Abigail Blevins each scored twice. Junior Hayley Krause had a strong outing, grabbing six draw controls and five ground balls. Freshman Katherine Judge finished with four ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Winthrop will head back out on the road Friday when it heads to Farmville, VA to face the Longwood Lancers in a 4 p.m. contest.
