Eagles Dominant In 17-4 Victory Over Vermont Saturday Afternoon

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team turned in a dominating offensive and defensive performance Saturday afternoon, downing the Vermont Catamounts 17-4 at Eagle Field.

The Eagles improved to 5-1 on the season, earning their fourth-straight victory, tying the program's longest winning streak.  Vermont fell to 2-4.

Winthrop's defensive effort, allowing just four goals, set the program record for the fewest goals allowed in a contest which had been set earlier this year against Kennesaw State when the Eagles allowed five.

Senior Jenna Kasmarik totaled six points Saturday, scoring five goals and tacking on one assist.  Freshman Allie Yeager scored four goals on five shots.  Fellow freshman Kristen Shriver finished with four points, scoring one goal and adding three assists.

Junior Danielle Ellis scored three goals and had two assists while Logan McCarthy added two goals.  Junior Shannon Gallagher scored one goal and had two assists while also forcing four turnovers and picking up three ground balls.  Freshman goalie Alaina Girani finished with seven saves and also picked up five ground balls and caused one turnover.

Kasmarik got the Eagles on the scoreboard less than two minutes in on a feed from Shriver.  After the Catamounts tied the game less than two minutes later Winthrop went up by two on goals from Ellis and Kasmarik.

Vermont scored its only other goal of the half with 20:55 on the clock to stay within one at 3-2.  The Eagles scored the final four goals of the half, one each from Kasmarik and Yeager while McCarthy scored the last two as the Eagles took a 7-2 lead into the break.

Gallagher got the Eagles rolling early in the second half, but Vermont again tried to remain close, staying within five with 26:20 left in the contest.  Winthrop scored at 24:20 and Vermont responded at 21:05, but that was the last time a Catamount shot found the back of the net.

Winthrop scored the final eight goals of the contest in the last 19:16.  Yeager scored three straight in 2:16, giving the Eagles a 12-4 lead with 17 minutes left.  Ellis scored two of her three in the second half and Kasmarik capped off the game with two more tallies in the final 2:37.

The Eagles finished with 36 shots to Vermont's 13.  Winthrop won the ground ball and draw control battles 20-14 and 17-6 respectively.  The Eagles finished with 10 caused turnovers.

Winthrop will finish off its six-game home stand on Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. against the Bucknell Bison.
