ROCK HILL, SC—The Big South Conference announced its annual men's basketball awards as Winthrop's
Keon Moore,
Xavier Cooks and
Derrick Henry all received recognition.
Moore was named to the All-Big South First Team after finishing the regular season with the fourth best scoring average in the Big South at 18.7. Cooks was named to the Big South All-Freshmen Team while Henry was named to the Big South All-Academic Team.
Moore, a redshirt senior guard, is the first Winthrop player to be named to the first team since Michael Jenkins and Craig Bradshaw in 2006-07. He had a number of accomplishments throughout the season as he set the school's single-season Div. I record in points and scoring average as well as setting a new school mark for scoring average in Big South games only (19.9). His conference scoring average was second to the Player of the Year in the Big South, Saah Nimley. Moore was the only player in the league to rank in the Top 5 of scoring, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, three-point field goal percentage and three-point field goals per game. He is six shy of tying the school record for three-pointers made in a season of 100 set by Michael Jenkins in 2006-07 and has a chance to finish with the best three-point field goal percentage in a season and a career in the history of the program.
Cooks averaged 7.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.6 blocks while shooting 54 percent from the field during the regular season. He increased his scoring to 8.7 points per game in league play. The 6-8 forward set a program record for shots in a single-season by a freshman with 46 as the passed the old record of 44 in the final regular season. Cooks ranks second in the Big South in blocks per game and his 46 total blocks are third all-time in a single-season at Winthrop. On Feb. 23 he earned Big South Conference Freshman of the Week honors.
It was Henry's second time being named to the All-Academic Team as he earned the same honor in 2012-13. He has a 3.69 grade-point average while seeking a degree in business management.
