FRESNO, CA – Jenna Kasmarik recorded a career-high nine points and tied a career-high with seven goals Sunday to lead the Winthrop lacrosse team to a 17-6 victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs, extending its winning streak to six games.
Kasmarik totaled five goals and two assists in the first half and added two more tallies in the second. Kasmarik's seven goals came on nine total shots. She was also 2-for-2 on free-position attempts.
Junior Abigail Blevins tallied three goals while fellow juniors Shannon Gallagher and Danielle Ellis each scored twice. Junior Hayley Krause led the Eagles with six draw controls while freshman Katherine Judge had four draws. Freshman goalie Alaina Girani picked up the victory, making three saves while giving up four goals.
Winthrop (7-1) got off to a strong start, going up 8-0 before the Bulldogs got on the board. Kasmarik had a part in five of those eight goals, scoring three and assisting on two others. Allie Yeager, Katie Clark, Shannon Gallagher, Abigail Blevins and Danielle Ellis each tallied the other five goals for the Eagles.
After Fresno State (2-6) put up two goals, cutting the Winthrop lead to 8-2, Kasmarik got going again, scoring two more before the break. Abigail Blevins and Gallagher both tallied their second goals of the game to give Winthrop the 12-4 lead at the break.
Kasmarik grabbed the first goal of the second half, just under five minutes in. Freshman Kristen Shriver tallied her only goal of the contest with 18:02 remaining. Less than two minutes later Kasmarik got her final tally of the game and Danielle Ellis made it 16-4 with 14:30 on the clock.
Fresno State scored with 11 minutes left before Abigail Blevins grabbed the final Winthrop goal with 7:19 on the clock. The Bulldogs scored the final goal of the contest with just over four minutes left.
Winthrop finished with 28 total shots to Fresno's 12. The Eagles won the draw control battle 17-8, but was outdone on ground balls 12-9. Winthrop finished 3-for-4 on free-position attempts.
The Eagles will stay on the west coast for their next contest on Wednesday against the San Diego State Aztecs at 10 p.m. EST / 7 p.m. PST.
