ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop baseball team batted around and scored five runs in the third inning to overcome a four-run deficit and defeat Kennesaw State 11-4
on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Eagles win the series 2-1 and improve to 13-5 overall while The Owls drop to 9-8. The Eagles will travel to Columbia to take on the 7
th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks
on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. before battling The Citadel
on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. in Charleston.
Winthrop batters combined for 12 hits led by
Anthony Paulsen and
Tyler Asbill who both went 2-4 at the plate with two RBI each.
Matt Crohan took the win for the Eagles, pitching six innings and giving up all four runs on six hits. Middle reliever
Travis Shelley came and gave up no hits in two innings before
Joey Strain closed out the game in the ninth with two strikeouts. Gabe Friese suffered the loss, allowing five runs on three hits in 2.1 innings.
"They threw us a couple haymakers," said Eagles' skipper
Tom Riginos. "But there was no panic in our dugout. After being down by four, we had the big third inning to go up by one and we kept building after that."
After going down 4-0 after two and a half innings, Winthrop responded with a five run third. After leading off the inning with a single,
Brad Kaczka was safe at second on a throwing error by the second baseman as
Chad Smith reached on fielder's choice.
Kyle Edwards walked to load the bases, and Kaczka came home on a walk by Asbill. Paulsen then singled through the right side gap to score Smith and advance Edwards and Asbill. Edwards crossed the plate on a wild pitch before
Mark Lowrie doubled down the right field line to drive home Asbill and Paulsen and take the lead 5-4.
Asbill got his second RBI in the fourth inning, knocking home Kaczka from second on a single up the middle.
The Eagles tacked on four more runs, scoring twice in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Babe Thomas and Paulsen got into scoring position after a walk, a single and sacrifice bunt by Lowrie. Both runners scored on back to back singles by
Roger Gonzalez and Menken before Kaczka grounded into a double play to end the fifth inning.
With one out in the sixth, Edwards and Asbill both singled and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Edwards scored on a single by Thomas before Asbill crossed the plate as Paulsen reached on fielder's choice that got Thomas out at second.
Menken scored the final run for the Eagles in the seventh, coming home off a single by Kaczka after getting hit by a pitch and stealing second
